After Burner II Arcade
So, the player pilots an F-14 Tomcat-inspired jet, destroying enemies with machine gun fire and a limited supply of missiles.
Similar to Space Harrier, it is an “on-the-rails” shooter – the plane will travel continuously into the screen, with players only able to adjust its X and Y coordinates.
In this updated version of After Burner, the most important change is the addition of throttle controls,
a throttle stick is used to slow down the aircraft or activate it’s afterburners.
This change completely the pace of stages and the number of enemies appearing on the screen. After Burner II added also a few minor enemy changes to introduce new speed-based challenges (missiles/aircraft behind the player aircraft) to account for the use of the new throttle control.
The objective of the game is to survive through each of the 23 stages, shooting down enemies is technically optional, although alleviates the risk of being destroyed. The player has a limited supply of missiles which are refueled at various intervals throughout the game.
Stages 5, 13 and 23 are non-playable landing cutscenes and 8 and 17 are “bonus stages” canyon bombing runs, that require the player to dodge scenery.
The remaining stages involve air to air combat using an unlimited cannon, and a limited supply of missiles.
The missile supply is restored approximately every 2-3 levels in a non-playable air-to-air refueling sequence, as well as in the first two landing cutscenes.
Cameos from the vehicles in Hang-On, and Out Run, make appearances during the first two landing cutscenes, driving down the runway in front of the F-14 as it is taking off.
